Hard luck to the U18 lads who lost out to St Edwards (Rathcoffey/Cappagh/Straffan/Ardclough) in the D4 league final.
Suncroft were playing against a very strong wind in the first half and for the first ten minutes were playing well and only down by 2 good St Edwards points from play. One or two calls went against them and for the rest of the half indiscipline did more harm than the wind.
Of St Edwards next 1:10(13) in the first half 1:05 were direct from frees & two more points came from frees. Four of the pointed frees were also made easy when the ball was brought forward for verbals. Half time St Edwards 1:12(15) Suncroft 0:01(1).
The half time chat settled Suncroft down and with the wind at their back they started to play football. They scored some superb points but needed goals to close the big gap. Only one came and it was as a result of a penalty. Suncroft put 1:10 on the scoreboard in the second half (8 points from on form Conn Kehoe who moved to mid field) but St Edwards got 6 points to keep the gap to seven points. The discipline was better in the second half but three of St Edwards six were from frees and two of those were moved forward and made easy by verbals.
Final score St Edwards 1:18(21) Suncroft 1:11(14). A well deserved win for St Edwards and a bit of work to be done before championship in Suncroft.
